UNITED'S MANAGERS



United have had an array of managers over the last 60 years, some for a few years some for a matter of a few matches. It is known that Tom Brown was listed as "Team Leader" back in 1906 till 08 and that Harry Lowe was listed as Head Coach for the 1948-49 season, but you have to go to 1959 to get the first "Manager" ,Jim Tootle was given the job at the start of the season, Jim was also secretary at the time. but lasted until Nov as he was replaced by Maurice Hill who lasted till Nov 1961 before he resigned, leaving the way for former boss Jim Tootle to return to see the season out.
It wasnt until Wesley Bridge took over at the end of the season that United began to get a name for themselves, It was Bridge who took charge of Uniteds first Amateur Cup game and to sow the seeds of what was to come in just a few years time.
 
Wesley Bridge    April 62 till Feb 65, stood down because of ill health.
Don Baker           Feb 65 - end of season as Caretaker Manager
Charlie Jones      Aug 65 - Oct 66    Resigned
Bernie Banks      Oct 66 - May 67   Bernie along with his assistant Ian St John took United to the Amateur Cup Final in 1967 before resigning.
Cyril Done           Aug 67- May 68    Former Liverpool, Tranmere Rovers striker Who joined Uniteds playing staff in the late 50’s 60’s returned to take the reigns  for just 1 season
Roy Rees             May 68- Jan 72   Most successful United manager, cumulating in the Amateur Cup win and promotion to the Northern Premier League, Arrived from Prescot Cables later to go to  (1972 to 1975), the team won the Vauxhall Conference championship twice and the F.A. Trophy once. Followed up with a season at Bangor City before moving on to  coach the national teams in Iraq, Iceland, Sudan, and Algeria, and was coach of the British team in the 1978 World University Games.
As head coach of the US National U-17 Team from 1985 through 1993, Roy Rees led the Americans to four consecutive appearances in the World Cup.  
Alan Spence           Jan 72- Oct 74   Joined from Southport coaching staff had previously played for Sunderland, Darlington, Southport and Oldham
Harry McNally      Oct 74- May 75  Unusually for a Football League manager, McNally's playing career was spent as an amateur at Skelmersdale United. Upon retirement as a player, he became coach at the club and later served as manager at  Altrincham, Southport, Wigan and Chester. Was a member of coaching staff at Altrincham as football league clubs began to take note of his achievements.
John Morris           July- Dec 75
Roger Aindow        Dec 75-May 76   Signed in 1973 from Horwich by Alan Spence the former Blackpool and Southport defender, was put in charge of a sinking ship as United had made it clear they were to resign from the NPL. Player Manager.
Doug Coutts            July76- Oct 78  Player Manager, Former Wigan Ath defender  spent his two years in charge back in the Now much reduced Lancashire Comb.
Tony Hartford         Oct 78- Apr 80
Terry Hale              Aug 80- May 82
Albie Sheils             Aug 82- May 84   Albie was incharge as we moved from the Cheshire County League to the Newly formed North West Counties, reaching the Final of the NWC League Cup in his first season in charge , losing to Darwen.
Gerry McIntyre       July- Dec 84
Russ Perkins           Dec 84- Apr 88, Well travelled striker In his first spell in charge Russ was Player Manager. Perkins has been in nonleague management for 24 years, starting as player-boss at South Liverpool. Prior to that, he played for Northwich Vics, Morecambe, Macclesfield and Walton and Hersham, for whom he appeared in a memorable FA Cup win over Brian Clough's Brighton in 1973. Coming from Southport where he was in charge for just 6 months, Progressing  the club up to NWC Div 1 before moving on to Burscough. 
Denis Smith            Aug 88- March 89
Ian Granite             March 89-Sept 89  Came from Local league management at Ravenhead (where I managed a few games as keeper or defender) Was only in charge for 7 games having won 2, drew 2, and lost 3.
Glen Buckley         Sept 89- May 90
Tommy O'Neill      Aug 90- May 93
Tommy Lawson     Aug-Sept 93 In his first "short" spell in charge brought only 1 win in 12  before time was called with united sitting next to bottom 

The next 3 managers were all former players, first Dave Maloney from Sept93-May94, retired through ill health, he was replaced by Jimmy Williams who took charge from the begining of 94-95 season but was replaced come christmas by John Flaherty, who was appointed player manager till Jan 95.

Barry Headley        Jan 96- March 97.  United relegated to NWC 2 end of 96 season and were mid table by the end of 97, Brought Prolific scorer Frank Ryan to the club.
Paul Gallagher        Mar-May 97   First spell in charge was as Caretaker till the end of the season
Russ Perkins           June 97- March 2002  The start of the rebuilding of the club, Russ returned  United to the NWC 1st Division. in his first season, Mid table was achieved in the four seasons he was in charge. Was also responsible for bringing first piece of silverware to the club for nearly 30 years when beating Newcastle in the Final of League Cup in 2000
Paul Gallagher         Mar 02-May 06, Gallagher has a long association with Skelmersdale United having been a player in the early 80's and also coach during the early to mid 90's.Originally taken on as caretaker but was handed the job on a permanent basis shortly after the start of 02-03, Culminating in a  2nd place to clinch promotion to the Northern Premier League, also got the team to the final of NWC League Cup in 2005, where the fatigue of 8 games in 14 days took their toll as United went down to Cammel Lairds. Controversially sacked on presentation evening. 
Tommy Lawson       May 06- present Tommy took over the reigns in June 2006, and is a vastly experienced manager.  Tommy Lawson has a great pedigree at Unibond level, having taken Prescot Cables up from the North West Counties as Champions at the end of the 2002-03 season into the Unibond First Division where he gained automatic promotion to the Unibond Premier Division.
 In his final season, Prescot were play-off candidates for a place in the Conference North.  Has also managed at Clitheroe, Congleton, Stantondale, Warrington Town and a brief spell at Skelmersdale back in 1992. Guided United to 4 consecutive Play-Off places
